Former No. 1 High School Star Skal Labissiere Joins Kings After Three-Year Absence from NBA

Skal Labissiere is back in the NBA after being out of the league for three years. The former No. 1 high school star has signed a deal with the Sacramento Kings, according to local reports.

It was initially reported that it was a minimum contract.

But Shams Charania of The Athletic reported that it was an Exhibit 10 deal, which pays up to $75K annually.

The Kings will assign Labissiere to their G League affiliate after the season begins and evaluate his readiness for the regular season.

Labissiere could have had a much more successful career if he had stayed healthy.

The 6-foot-11 power forward was born in 1996 and is only 27 years old now.

He was a five-star recruit in high school and was ranked ahead of players like Simmons and Ingram. He was projected as the potential No. 1 pick in the draft.

Scouts raved about his skills on both ends of the floor and his ability to play inside and outside. He was compared to Anthony Davis as his best case scenario.

Labissiere dominated the high school scene for a long time until he suffered a back injury in his senior year that hurt his stock.

Despite his injury concerns, Labissiere still went in the first round of the 2016 draft. The Kings took a chance on him with the 28th pick.

They are now giving him another opportunity after parting ways for several years.

Labissiere put up respectable numbers in his NBA career. He averaged 7.5 points, 4.5 rebounds and made 35% of his threes.

He played a reduced role as a bench player but still contributed when he was on the floor.

However, Labissiere's body betrayed him too often. He was plagued by injuries and missed many games. He only played 148 games in four years.

He was cut by the Kings, Trail Blazers and Hawks because of his durability issues.

The last time Labissiere played a game was in March 2020.

He hopes to make the most of this new chance and show what he can do instead of disappearing from the league...
